360Flex Community Keynote videos

I've been twittering about this the last week or so off and on, then it occured to me, a blog post wouldn't hurt. Ted inspired me with the MAX keynote video post. I was like duh. Luckily there's still time!

Thanks to EventVue, we can capture and display videos recorded on youtube in one place. The plan is to have the videos running in a loop before our Wednesday keynote, dubbed the community keynote. If we get enough we may do them at lunch too in one of the session rooms.

It's simple. So simple I did, and I don't use youtube, call me a Luddite if you must!

Record a video, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, whatever we don't care. tag it '360flex08'

So long as it's not completely gross, and maybe even then, we'll take 'em and show them before the keynote. Go ahead search youtube right now, you'll see my lame video! Put yours up so I'm not all alone up there with Josh.

See you in San Jose!

360Flex is Officially Sold Out!

Last time, we got close. In Atlanta, we were about 16 away. Maybe you saw Myo's note or John's post about it. Or maybe you tried to hit the registration site and saw the picture below.

Regardless, we just wanted to confirm that 360|Flex San Jose is officially sold out.  410 of you didn't procrastinate and got in.  An untold number of you didn't and will likely be emailing us sob stories this week.

The nice thing about selling out is that ticket sales is one less thing to worry about.  We can now turn our attention 100% to running the show that begins this Sunday.  We have lots of stuff in store for you.  Some of which we'll be highlighting for you this week on the blog.

For those of you that didn't make it to the reg site in time to get a ticket, shame on you.  However, not all is lost.  We have a couple of announcements to make that should help ease the pain your procrastination has caused.  Stay tuned to this blog as we'll echo the big news from the show here.

For those of you that did manage to buy your tickets, congratulations and thank you.  John and I do these shows for you and selling out lets us know that you appreciate us doing them.  Get a lot of rest before you arrive, as we have a lot planned for you next week.  Get ready for what will be the best 360|Flex yet.  See you Sunday!

360Flex We bumped into Jim Cheng at teh Halloween costume store

Down the street from Tom's house they opened one of those Halloween costume stores, the kind that show up in early September and are a vacant store building November 1st. We decided to drop in a take a look.

We walked down the aisle with the masks, and there was Jim Cheng, speaker at 360|Flex San Jose. He had what looked like a Tuxedo Mask mask on. Whipping the mask off, "Uh, hi guys."

We look at the mask, then at Jim, then the mask again, "Uh hey Kim, how's it going? Excited about San Jose?"

Picking up a Freddy Krueger mask Jim answers, "Yeah. Super excited!" He put Freddy down, and picked up A Gargamel mask.

"Nice." I say pointing to the mask. "So, who should come to your session?"

Jim keeps the mask, watching Tom pick up a Robocop mask, "Everyone.  Folk that want to see the future of web application analytics and usability tools.  Yeah, that sounds kinda boring and not very 360|Flex-ish.   So scratch that.  How about:  Everyone and anyone that wants to get a glimpse at some of the wicked cool research that we've been up to at EffectiveUI over the last year. "

I pick up a crazy looking captain kirk mask, "Why should they come?"

Jim takes the mask, and turns it inside out, handing it back to me, "There's going to be something for everyone at my session--from user interface designers to low-level compiler engineers.  They'll all be able to walk away with some new insights into how we can use Flex and the Flash platform to build and test verifiably better RIAs.  Or if I actually do end up with a baby-doll T-shirt from Tom and John because I answered so crazily late, you can at least come, take pictures, and laugh at me."

We walk towards the full costume section of the store, Tom picks up a hercules (the Kevin Sorbo one) costume, "like?"

Shuddering, I ask Jim, what the goal of his session is.

Picking up a Power Ranger (the red one, from the first US show, none of those Johnny-come-latelies after that) costume, "Show developers how to collect better analytics and usability data from RIAs.   RIAs are not websites, and as a result, we need to move beyond the world of click-throughs and page impressions.  I will be presenting a number of novel ways to monitor RIA usage and performance that you can take home and build into your own applications."

I pick up a Cousin It costume, I'm all about no fuss, and no effort when I have to wear a halloween costume, "What two sessions are you looking forward to?"

Jim puts down the Red Ranger, and moves over to a costume that's almost 11 ft tall, made up mostly of a huge cloak and these enormous arms coming out. There's a huge harness inside, Jim slides into it, "If I had to choose two right now, probably Matt Chotin's and Eric Ko's.  But I'm really looking forward to hitting as many as I can.  There's a lot of real interesting goings-on in the Flex development community these days, and I don't want to miss a thing."

Tom picks up a tron costume, "what would you tell people, watiing until the last minute to decide to attend? There's a week left, and not many spots left."

Jim walks over and politely takes the tron guy costume from Tom, shaking his head. "360|Flex is focused specifically on Flex development and gives you some serious bang-for-the buck between the included pre-conference training, the depth of the technical sessions, and the all the Flex-developing cool kids that you'll get to meet and drink beer with."

I notice that Jim didn't put the costume down, and am about say something when Tom screams and runs toward the front of the store. Jim and I look and there's a little kid with a clown costume on. Jim looks at me, I shrug and tell him we'll see him in a week and head towards the front of the store.

Wanna see Jim in 'The Tron Guy' suit? better register now. Space is incredibly limited! We're down to the final 20 seats!

360Flex Free Sunday Training Highlight: MidnightCoders

We wrap up our free Sunday training highlight*. Today, we highlight the Midnight Coders Business Intelligence session.

For those of you who have never seen Mark Piller before, you're in for a treat. This is a very passionate person, who started his business programming into the wee hours of morning (hence the name The Midnight Coders). His products have helped many enterprises connect their Flex code to their legacy backend systems. Therefore, you know Mark is famailar with Business Intelligence. Mark will be covering Client/Server Integration and RIA Analytics.

Client/Server Flex Integration 101

The sessions focuses on the fundamental concepts for Flex client/server integration: remoting, data management and messaging. You will learn about development environment setup and configuration, remoting API and development productivity tools like service browser and code generation.

RIA Analytics 101

Flex application runs as black box - you do not know what the users are doing and HOW they are using your application. In this session you will learn about techniques to extract, analyze and visualize the RIA usage data.

As you can see these are some great sessions.  Don't miss out on this opportunity.

* - This week, we're highlighting all your options for free preconference Training. These hands-on sessions will take place on Sunday, August 17th, the day before the show officially starts. They are 100% free to all registered guests, so be sure to stop by on Sunday and getcha learn on. All the descriptions can also be found in the eProgram Guide.

To register, simply send an RSVP to info@360flex.com and let us know you're coming.  We've now added checkboxes for your Free Sunday training selection to the registration process.  If you checked that off, there's no need to send an additional RSVP.

If you haven't registered yet, you better register now. Most conferences charge $500+ for their preconference training. We charge $480 for our entire conference and throw the preconference training in for free.

Doing mockups? Do 'em cooler!

I stumbled across balsamiq Mockups the other day and was in love. I don't do many mockups really, but the next time I do, I'll be using Mockups!

The last time I mocked up an app in full was the Survey tool we released in Atlanta.
Mockups is truly a cool application, as you add elements to your mockup, you can make them reflect your application.

Using Mockups is just like mocking up an app on paper (my current method), including scribbling things out, or making big red X's, dropping a sticky, it's very intuitive.

I went through it this morning to see what it was all about (and take screen shots) and could easily see myself firing the app up (it's an AIR app, by the way, w00t!) and quickly outlining how my app would work.

Wanna learn to make apps like Mockups? There's still time (though not much) to register for 360|Flex San Jose. There won't be a wait list, we don't do that, so don't dilly dally, register now!

360Flex we ran into Ben Stucki at the video store

Tom and I decided to rent some movies to take a break from planning our next event, so we headed to the nearest Blockbuster video, and right there in the classic horror section was Ben Stucki, speaker at 360|Flex San Jose.

"hey dude, how ya doin?" I ask as we walk over to him. He puts down a copy of 'The Toxic Avenger' and says, "Hey guys, I'm good, you?"

"Just taking a break. 360|Flex San Jose is only about 10 days away, who do you hope comes to your session?" Tom asks, picking up a copy of Event Horizon.

As Stucki answers, I smack the box out of Tom's hand wagging a finger at him, "No"

"Everybody should come. If you see somebody outside the conference rooms during my session, tell them to run because they're missing out!"

I pick up a copy of RoboCop, obviously in the wrong section, but still a damn good flick, "I'll buy that for a dollar! So Ben why should they come to your session?"

He walks over to the classic drama section, picking up a misplaced 'Care Bares Movie' between two fingers, "Ick. To learn how to build frameworks. Not just how to use existing frameworks or an overview of age-old patterns, but how to solve specific problems or add functionality to Flex in a clean and reusable way."

"that's cool, that's a huge plus. I may have to sneak away to sit in on that one." Tom says, walking around the movie rack in the childrens section, Stucki hands him the offending Care Bare movie and moves on toward the Sci Fi section.

Stucki picks up Batman (the 1966 version), tucks it under one arm, moving on, "I really hope that people walk away from my session with a new approach to Flex development. The session will be a little like philosophy class for developers, but I'm also trying to take all those lofty architectural ideas and bring them down to some real world code examples. When you manage to decouple code from the application and simplify it enough to be idealistic and functional at the same time, things start working the right way almost by accident."

Tom picks up a copy of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, a classic any day, and asks Stucki what two sessions he wants to see most in San Jose.

Stucki picks up a copy of Blue Thunder, and walks with us towards the freakishly long line, hello it's a Thursday, why are you people renting! "I'm definitely going to be at Ryan Campbell's session on PlexiGlass. I know he's working on some really awesome examples, and Plexiglass makes it stupid easy to do 3D in Flex. I'm also looking forward to Laura Arguello's presentation on Mate."

We pay for our movies, Stucki pays for his, and as we head for the door, Tom asks, "what should we tell the fence sitters? we're about 2 weeks out and people are surely still debating whether they want to attend?"

Stucki looks at us, and with a straight face say, "Get off the fence. Seriously, this is where the entire Flex community hangs out. If you're a Flex developer and your not there, you're missing out." He smiles, "That's what I'd tell 'em at least"

Ben Stucki would know, he's been to every single 360|Flex in the US. Times almost out, there is no waiting list, register now!

Make sure to check out the free Sunday training for registered attendees.

For those procrastinators out there, there are only 50 tickets left for 360|Flex San Jose 2008 while I write this at 2:30 pm, Tuesday, August 5th.

That may sound like a lot if you're only buying one ticket, but not when you realize that we sold 16 tickets today and it's still only 2:30.

If you're lucky, I'll wake up early and update this post with the true number of tickets left. Don't count on it though. Book your ticket NOW, cuz when you come crying with "But I was going to buy my ticket today!" You'll get no sympathy from John and I. Just a big fat "We warned you!"

Plus, we don't do wait lists. Never have, not likely to start!

Blog this. Tell your friends. Make some smoke signals. Whatever. Just get the word out, "50 left. Act quickly."

360Flex Free Sunday Training Highlight: OpenFlux with Ben Stucki

We continue highlighting our free Sunday training session*. Today we highlight the OpenFlux session.

OpenFlux lets developers create radically custom Flex components in dramatically less time than they could before. Next year Flex 4, code named Gumbo, promises to bring similar improvements to applications targeting Flash Player 10, but what about your projects today? In this hands on training session, Ben will guide attendees through the OpenFlux framework as they build real world Flex applications using custom OpenFlux components. Ryan will also be on hand to demonstrate how OpenFlux is used to create 3D components without any advanced coding. Because OpenFlux was created to be easy, even beginners can build custom components within the first few minutes. So whether you're new to Flex or just interested in the future of the Flex framework, this is the perfect opportunity to learn more about OpenFlux.

If you have a great component idea or design, submit it to the "OpenFlux Big Idea Contest" at http://www.360flex.com/apicontest and you could win a PlayStation 3! Then come to the hands on training and learn how to build your component using OpenFlux!

360Flex Free Sunday Training Highlight: RiaOne

We continue highlighting our free Sunday training session*. Today we highlight the Making Flex easier for Java Programmers led by James Huang and Sponsored by Riaone.

The R1-RPC/J Toolkit Training

RPC is the necessary evil in client-server systems. You don't like to think about it, just want to use it. Low-level network services in Flex, Flash, and AJAX make RPC possible in RIAs, but using them directly for RPC demands too much mechanical coding. Many home-grown solutions try to shield the unwanted details, but come short in various ways.

R1-RPC/J is a well designed, tested, and supported solution for you to handle all your RPC needs in Flex/Flash-Java systems. It is light-weight, easy to own and use, and friendly for system design. It will also foster better teamwork and improved development process with its unit testing feature.

The D.eval API Training

It is all about eval(), or lack thereof, in ActionScript 3.

Adobe chose not to have eval() in AS3 for good reasons. But people find other good reasons to have it. With D.eval API, the dispute is silenced — now, you can happily eval() in AS3 if you want to. The question is, how powerful is the supported language for the dynamic code? Here is the good news: D.eval API supports a very potent scripting language embedded in AS3.

For those who have been yearning and crying for the lack of eval() in AS3, come to share the joy and fun of eval()'ing with the D.eval API at our 360|Flex pre-conference training!

For more detail, come to the training class on Sunday, August 17! You will get all the training materials and a lot more!

Schedule:
1:00-2:30: R1-RPC/J Toolkit hands-on training
3:00-3:45: D.eval API hands-on training
4:00-5:00: R1-RPC/J Toolkit hands-on training

360|Flex we ran into Dave Hassoun at local art gallery

Denver has a special night each first Friday of the month where the galleries all remain open into the night, have wine, snacks, and such, and it's a huge ass party. Tom and I decided to hit up First Friday before heading to San Jose for 360|Flex San Jose.

We walked into one of the galleries and almost bumped into Dave Hassoun sipping some red wine, "Hey guys, I didn't know you were in town? Weren't you just in San Jose at a Panera?"

Tom and I exchange a look, I replied, "uh yeah, but now we're here."

We walk back towards where the gallery owner has set up a card table with wine and snacks on it. "So Dave, who do you think should be at your session in San Jose?"

I grab a dixie cup of wine, and some cheese balls, as Dave answered, "Anyone interested in why the sky is blue, water is wet, and the general meaning of life – or at least those interested in Streaming media and the Flash Media Server. Going to be covering some great stuff for managing streaming video from FMS to Flex. Some of it may be a little basic but other stuff will be more advanced and showing some of the great stuff in FMS 3."

"I always wondered why the sky was blue. I also wonder what we'd call an Orange, if it was blue." Tom says, grabbing a a cup of water.

Having procured refreshment and snacks we headed over to what looked like a painting of a 13 armed blue woman with no head. "Why should they come?" I ask, thinking the picture might be upside down.

Dave seems to be having the same trouble as I am, "To see how fast I can talk when I am all hopped up on caffeine and talking about something that I get really excited about. I do suggest bringing a recording device so that you can play it back in slow-mo after if you really want to get everything ;)
Or at least just come if you want to see how the FMS can really add another level of control and functionality to your applications."

We move on to a tryptic depicting, either the rapture or a Krispy Kreme production line. "What's the goal of your session?" I ask.

Nodding his approval of the Krispy rapture, "The goal would be to give some great information, have some fun and have the attendees be able to walk away with a better understanding of some of the really cool features of the powerful streaming media platform that Adobe has to offer."

Tom points at a floor display, so we walk over. It looks like a telescope, that's been covered in some sort of resin or something. The things that pass for art... Tom asks, "What two sessions are you looking forward to most?"

Dave looks around, and pokes the 'art' to see if the resin stuff was hard... it was, "Michael Labriola’s deep dive session on Flex events. I get all excited just thinking about the inner working of the Flex framework and Labriola knows how to bring even the most darkest deepest naughty secrets of it to light. The other session would be Jun Heiders – a fellow RealEyes media badass and his sessions always rock."

"Yeah, I hit up his session at MAX in Chicago, it was incredible." I say as we walk over towards a life sized mason jar of baby heads. "What would you like to tell people about 360|Flex if they're on the fence about attending?"

Dave looks at us, like we were the owners of the baby head jar, "Seriously!!! You can send a whole team for less than the price of MAX and get more in depth advanced sessions than you can find at any conference!! And they still have the free beer! It’s a no brainer – if you have any interest in Flex and want to learn more, and not just the stuff you can pick up in a text book then there is no choice or better price – get your Flex on in style with a 360 twist!!!!"

Dave would know, he's been to every 360|Flex, except the first one (No one is perfect, though I have been to them all, so it's possible), so listen to what he has to say about it! Register Now!
